Sneak Preview of Red Bull’s Project X, featuring Shaun White. Only at Nine Star Jan. 29th 7pm!

January 19th, 2010 by kmarlow

In the winter of 2009, deep in the backcountry of Colorado, Shaun White and Red Bull teamed up in a project like nothing the snowboard world had ever seen“.. OK, so what is this all about?

Project-X was born.

Silverton, Colorado is home to some of the best powder in the world. Silverton is not a regular ski resort. There are no similar infrastructure and services as for example in nearby Vail. Silverton is for experienced skiers and riders, and because of that it gets much less traffic than normal ski resorts. Silverton is a perfect spot to keep Shaun’s work under wraps.

Shaun’s giant pipe includes foam pit to which Shaun practices his new tricks. After training Shaun takes his tricks from concept to reality. After couple of months of training Shaun has his bag full of new tricks to be shown to the world.

 Red Bull Project X statistics

  • needed 7200 foam blocks to fill the foam pit
  • needed 300 man hours to build the foam pit
  • 250,000 cubic yards of snow was moved to make the half pipe
  • 30 avalanches were created by dropping dynamite to build Shaun’s pipe

New product info 2010 surf racks

November 1st, 2009 by szakeri

It's bizarre what one can see on a daily basis traveling from one Nine Star to another on the 405.Today, our own captain Janelle took a snap shot of the new 2010 surf racks coming soon to a surf shop near you. This new model is sure to make cars behind it a bit nervous as it may send a surfboard flying into their windshield! Our surf buyer ensured us that Nine Star will not carry this product just yet until it passes the safety tests. Until then I suggest you don't follow this car too closely!

Wetsuit Maddness and trade in drive is back!

September 23rd, 2009 by szakeri

It's starting to cool down again, and that means it's time to think about getting into a new suit. You know that crusty old neoprene rag you have hanging in your garage is not going to cut it this season, plus with all the new technology out there, like the upgraded O'Neill Psycho Freak of Xcel Drylock, you're going to want to get into a fresh suit regardless.

Well, this season we are all about putting your old rubber to good use. Just bring in your old wetsuit and we'll give you $50 towards any new full suit over $300 ($25 towards and suit under $300).  Don't have an old wetsuit?  Bring in your old rashguard and we'll give you $25 toward any full suit.  We'll take your old suit or rashie, and if it's in decent condition, donate it to Boarding house Mentors, an outreach organization in LA that introduces at-risk youth to surfing but if the wetsuit or the rashie is not in good condition, we'll send it out to be shredded down and recycled into new products! Pretty awesome, huh? So get in here and trade that old thing in. Limit one discount per new item.

New 2010 Lib Tech and GNU Banana boards are in!

September 21st, 2009 by szakeri

Creamy, rich, and sweet, bananas are a favorite food for everyone from infants to elders. Sports enthusiasts appreciate the potassium-power delivered by this high energy fruit and the scientists over at Mervin Manufacturing have figured out a way to cross breed a banana with a snowboard and creating a bunch of fun boards for us to get our shred on. With the leaves turning orange and falling off the trees and the temperatures dropping at night we are feeling our toes start itching, not because of the athlete's foot but because it's almost that time of the year where fluffy white stuff falls off the sky and covers the mountains for us to go slide on. Check out the new Banana MTX boards from Lib Tech and GNU and come get yours asap because if you don't get your equipment upgraded now, you will have to wait a whole year before you can get your hands on one of these Bananatastic boards as they sell out every year before the holiday season. Santa Claus is a Nine Star customer and he usually is to blame for the boards selling so fast. Don't be a statistic and miss out on these boards and let us help you get the right size Banana for your pleasure, gliding on snow kind of pleasure that is.

Let’s Get Mystikal Video Premiere at Nine Star

September 18th, 2009 by szakeri

Event: Mutiny's Let's get mystikal video premiere

Where: Nine Star WLA and Nine Star MV

When: Friday September 18th at 8pm

Review of "Let's get mystical" by Ryan Galvan of Vitalbmx.com

Let me start by saying that Mutiny's Stoked on Being Pumped is one of my favorite bmx videos of all time. Joe Simon is one of the best cinematographers in the bmx industry. This is definitely something rare to hear because there are few filmers in our industry that I would designate as cinematographers. He truly is an artist and his work must be appreciated as art. His latest work, Let's Get Mystical, only expresses this fact even more clearly. He raised the bar on bmx film making with SOBP by using tools and techniques seen in many art film projects, from his wedding films, to the set of the latest Hollywood blockbuster. Some examples of this would be his use of Glidecam stabilizer systems and Cinevate cranes and dollies. In LGM, he took it a step further by using a collaboration of not only state of the art HD technology but also beautiful 16mm and 8mm film stock.

The concept behind LGM is based around several road-trips the Mutiny team took around America and Europe this year. Despite them going on these trips, the bmx community stayed pretty ignorant that anything was going on until about a month ago. Instead of the typical rider specific video parts, the film is broken into chapters, each designating a new region and a new trip. However the video still contains an artsy side with several B-roll montages, which add so much worth to any Joe Simon production. Who can forget the beautifully done slow-motion montage and final mix section in SOBP?  These portions of the film are not meant to showcase the riding skill levels, so to speak, but more geared to showcasing the beauty of everything that surrounds the riding, something commonly forgotten until the transition to HD film making. This video includes the whole American Mutiny team: Brandon Hoerres, Hanson Little, Justin Simpson, Ryan Smith, Randy Taylor, George Boyd, and Andy Martinez, along with a few UK members including Josh Bedford and the legendary kook Mat Roe. Also along for the first part of the ride are ex-Mutiny members Niki Croft and Morgan Wade. It was great of Joe to see the importance of the work that Niki and Morgan put in for his video and I'm glad that this was not another example of sponsor changes causing a loss of good footage forever.

Every riders individual style is showcased throughout the video even with the lack of full rider sections. Standouts include the flow team rider George Boyd for one. He impressed me throughout the whole video and I see a bright future for this young rider. He is super tech and has many street lines, which he makes look so simple that you have to go back and look again to appreciate what happened a second time. Those looking back to SOBP may be expecting to see more of Hanson Little jumping every seemingly impossible gap in sight at high speed. Trust me, you will not be disappointed. Mat Roe showcases his tech tricks with lots of impressive style. I could watch his footage all day, be it bangers or B-roll. Justin Simpson also did well in showing off his I-don’t-care-about-my-physical-health style.

Standout chapters include a sweet film stock trails section with UK rider Robbo in Pennsylvania. There is nothing that motivates me to ride like a chill trails video and this section is no different. Robbo definitely has a sweet style.  The second half of the Midwest section has an awesome vibe with a Soulja Boy rap track laid down and plenty of big tricks and lifestyle clips thrown in for good measure. You really pick up on the fun vibe I'm sure these guys shared while out traveling and filming for this video. The Texas section is my favorite for sure.  You truly get the feeling that this is representative of just another day out riding with friends. Big show stopping clips are frequent but you also get the impression from some of it that these riders are just a bunch of friends out filming each other for a local scene video (filming each other very well however) while out sessioning a few spots. This chapter really hit a perfect balance of business tricks and fun, everyday, riding. Also, you better believe that Joe took advantage of Texas being the hometown and took the time to make sure the filming of every clip was planned out perfectly. This is definitely some of his best work yet. The main video ends with an awesome mix section of apparent bangers that the team can definitely be proud of. A title card and a few awesome mix sections of leftovers and b-roll follow this.

After reviewing my favorite moments from this film, I have to conclude that this is another all around excellent bmx film from Joe Simon and a great follow up to SOBP. Is every clip a jaw-dropping stunt or life changing aerial maneuver that will change bmx forever? No, but that is not what I think Joe and Mutiny are all about. They are about showcasing bmx as core as possible. Bmx isn't always about who can do the biggest tricks or make the most money its about sharing fun, laughs and adventures on your bike with your friends and Mutiny hit the nail right on the head in this video. I will definitely be getting my own copy of Let's Get Mystical and making it one of my staple videos to watch before any day out sessioning with my homies. I suggest you go out and do the same.

Girl Skate Park Trip

August 30th, 2009 by szakeri

Nine Star and girl Skateboards collaborated once again and with the help of Red Bull we loaded up 25 Nine Star members onto the Red Bull "Big Red" for a session at the private Girl Skatepark. This was the second annual Girl skate park trip and the set up had been changed since last summer. The kids were stoked to be there and the session began soon after arrival. Rick Howard and Guy Mariano were there to greet the kids and hand them some goodies. The session was amazing with trick after trick being thrown down on this super fun park. Look for the video montage coming shortly on youtube, in the mean time check out the photos below to see how it went down.

Los Angeles, August 29th
On the streets of Downtown Long Beach
W Broadway between Pine Ave and Pacific Ave
Event Time will be 2pm - 6pm
RSVP via Facebook
Map it

With Red Bull Manny Mania Am Series events running throughout the US, bringing the event to SoCal required a little more as we hold skateboarding to higher expectations here in the mecha of the game.

So we wanted to ensure the the right riders were going to come correct, so we brought $5,000 to the table and announced $2500 to the winner.

With that info out there, everyone and their teen sister would want to jump in, but to ensure it was the right dudes, we went to all of our TM friends at each of the Board, Shoe and Clothing companies and told them this would be an Am invite only event, so nominate 2 riders to skate the event.

And you can't just have a small field to take home that kind of coin, cats need to earn it, so we decided 48 riders would round out some nice competition.

So with all that info out there, the dudes are coming out of the woodwork to display manual skills.

Here's who's confirmed as of 8/10:
Nate Principato, Theotis Beasley, Ryan Decenzo, Kelly Hart, Rodrigo Peterson, Justin Schulte, Steven Webb, Angel Suacedo, Tony Karr, Louie Lopez, Grant Patterson, Morgan Smith, Keelan Dadd, Spencer Hamilton, Nick Tucker, Marshall Heath, Jamie Palmore, Larelle Gray, Derek Fukuhara, John Lupfer, Justin Cefai, Walker Ryan, Rodrigo Lima, Ray Maldanado, Tony Montgomery, Ricky Webb, Chris Van Berkom, Nick Trepanier, Adrian Adrid, Evan Smith, Jose Pereyra, Damian Loud, Norman Woods, Marty Murwski, Paul Kwon.
And to fill you all in with whats going on during the day, Casey (sans his Captain) will be on the mic with co-partner, Active's Corey Cady, also known by pseudonym as "Frijoles Blancos"."

Also, someone needs to decide who's better than the other dudes, and it sure as hell ain't gonna be us - these special guests will continue to be announced…

Lastly, what's a contest without the beats, and let me tell you, we're bringing the heat. HIERO will be in the house with a mid contest live set from DEL tha Funkee Homosapein and Bukue One. Gonna get crazy!

So wait, we hadn't ironed out the venue yet - where we gonna skate? Oh, nevermind, got it - in the streets of Downtown Long Beach. Plus, just so happens an additional 10,000 people will be milling around. We took over an entire city block for the event, and right next to where we are at is the Long Beach Funk Fest. For those into the Funk game, Mandrill, The Meters, Breakestra, Dawn Silva - insane. I know Del and I are gonna be kickin it over there a bit after the contest.

Its gonna be an insane day - See you out there.

PRACTICE STARTS AT NOON - CONTEST STARTS AT 2PM
*** Please think about Public transit as an option or look to park further and skate - as event parking could be a bit nutty!

FYI - If you are a rider wishing to compete, we are only accepting sponsored Am's for the LA event (Sorry…), so go to your board, shoe, clothing, etc team manager and ask them to contact their dude at Red Bull to get you in the mix. Only a couple of spots left.

Nine Star Skate Team Wins X-Games Silver

August 2nd, 2009 by szakeri

The Nine Star skate team managed to bring home the Silver Medal at the X-games. The team had won silver the first year X-games decided to have the shop vs shop challenge and last year they brought home gold. The original team that was supposed to skate at the contest had to be re-figured the day of the contest because of an injury on Felipe Gustavo's foot that he obtained at the Maloof Money Cup. To make things even more interesting, two other injuries occurred to Jeremiah Bohnet and Matt Lemond in the first heat and Matt Lemond had to skate with a twisted ankle in the final. But pain was nothing new to the young gun and he skated hard regardless of how much pain he was in. At the end of the day, the team came through and show cased their talents and showed the crowds a good time. Here are some pictures of Team Nine Star at the X-games.

Nine Star Skate Team Members are:

Andrew Pott, Nate Principato, Aryeh Kraus, Felipe Gustavo, Jeremiah Bohnet, Vitor Borger, Matt Lemond, Greg Pynes, Evan Berle and Morgan Wolf.
